Merced County, CA (September 20, 2025) – A bicyclist died Friday morning following a head-on hit-and-run collision in Merced County. The crash occurred on Santa Fe Drive west of Shaffer Road, just outside the city of Winton, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities reported that officers were dispatched to the area around 6:20 a.m. after receiving reports of an unresponsive man lying on the roadway. The victim, believed to be between 40 and 50 years old, had been riding westbound in the eastbound lane when an eastbound vehicle struck the front wheel of his bicycle in a head-on collision.
The driver failed to stop and continued traveling eastbound toward Shaffer Road, leaving the scene without rendering aid. Emergency personnel pronounced the bicyclist deceased at the location. Officials have not yet released the victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
The incident remains under investigation as law enforcement works to identify the vehicle and driver involved. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the crash to come forward to assist in the investigation.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the victim during this tragic time.
Bicycle accidents in Merced County pose serious risks to riders, particularly along rural or high-speed roadways such as Santa Fe Drive. Unlike motorists, bicyclists have little protection in the event of a collision, leaving them highly vulnerable to catastrophic or fatal injuries. Head-on crashes, such as this incident, are especially dangerous and frequently result in fatalities due to the direct force of impact.
Hit-and-run collisions further complicate these tragedies. When drivers leave the scene, victims are denied timely medical assistance that could potentially save lives. In addition, families are left without immediate accountability, often facing emotional and financial burdens while awaiting justice. Law enforcement agencies must then devote significant resources to locating the responsible driver.
Families of victims killed in bicycle crashes often experience overwhelming grief alongside practical hardships. Funeral expenses, loss of income, and the emotional toll of losing a loved one can create lasting challenges. In California, families may have the right to pursue wrongful death claims to hold negligent drivers accountable once they are identified. Such claims can provide compensation for funeral costs, medical expenses, loss of companionship, and other damages.
Legal counsel plays an essential role in these cases, especially when hit-and-run drivers are involved. Attorneys can assist families by working with investigators, reviewing accident reports, and pursuing claims against insurance providers. Even in cases where the driver is not immediately located, victims’ families may have options for recovery through uninsured motorist coverage and other legal avenues.
