Watsonville, CA (June 15, 2025) – Two women were hurt early Thursday morning, June 12, in a head-on crash on Highway 129 (Riverside Road) east of Watsonville, officers confirmed over the weekend.
The California Highway Patrol said the women were in a Kia sedan that pulled onto Highway 129 as the driver was attempting a left turn from Thompson Road around 5:30 a.m.. A Ford Ranger pickup traveling westbound on Highway 129 with two men aboard slammed head-on into the Kia.
The impact pushed the Kia off the pavement into a ditch and flipped the Ford onto its roof. Both women were taken to area hospitals, while the men were uninjured, the CHP confirmed. That said, no additional details were released, and authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their family members.
According to traffic analysts, rollover crashes rank among the gravest roadway incidents in California. Although they represent only a small fraction of total collisions, they are responsible for an outsized share of devastating injuries and fatalities. A rollover happens when a vehicle tips onto its side or roof—sometimes rolling over multiple times—before finally coming to rest.
While any automobile can overturn, SUVs, pickups, and vans face an elevated risk because of their higher centers of gravity. Speeding, abrupt maneuvers, tire failure, and impacts with other vehicles or roadside hazards frequently trigger these violent events.
Many rollovers involve only one vehicle, yet the driver is not automatically to blame. Unsafe roadway design, mechanical defects, or another motorist’s reckless lane change can set the stage for tragedy. Pinpointing the true cause demands a thorough investigation that preserves evidence, interviews witnesses, and analyzes vehicle data.
Injury patterns are often severe: spinal damage, traumatic brain injuries, complex fractures, and internal organ harm can impose staggering medical costs and months—if not years—of rehabilitation. Victims may also grapple with lost earnings, chronic pain, and profound emotional trauma.
