San Leandro, CA (October 13, 2025) – Authorities are investigating a fatal high-speed pursuit that resulted in the deaths of two suspects and left two California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers with serious injuries on Saturday morning, October 11, along Interstate 238 in San Leandro. The incident began after a traffic stop for speeding escalated into a chase that ended in a catastrophic double collision.
According to preliminary information from law enforcement, the pursuit started around 3:41 a.m. when a white Mercedes sedan failed to yield during a traffic stop on Interstate 580 near Eden Canyon Road in Castro Valley. The suspects continued at a high rate of speed as CHP units pursued the vehicle onto the I-238 connector. Moments later, the fleeing car lost control while attempting to exit onto East 14th Street and collided violently with a sound barrier.
Shortly after the initial crash, the pursuing CHP unit was also involved in a secondary collision when it struck the same sound wall. Both officers sustained major but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for medical care. The two suspects inside the Mercedes were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant in the suspects’ vehicle survived the impact and was taken to a local hospital with major injuries.
Responding units from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and the Alameda County Fire Department assisted in treating the injured and managing the scene. Investigators documented evidence from the site and will continue to review pursuit procedures and the circumstances leading to the deadly crash.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident.
High-speed pursuits remain one of the most dangerous law enforcement operations, often posing serious risks to both officers and the public. In densely populated areas such as San Leandro and the surrounding Alameda County, pursuits frequently occur on major corridors like I-238 and I-580, where traffic density and speed can exacerbate the likelihood of severe or fatal outcomes.
According to the California Highway Patrol’s annual collision data, a significant percentage of pursuit-related crashes involve loss of control or failed navigation during sharp turns or exits, particularly at high speeds. When such incidents occur, multiple agencies—including local police and fire departments—coordinate response efforts to provide medical assistance, control traffic flow, and begin immediate investigation efforts.
