San Juan Capistrano, CA (August 13, 2025) – Three big-rig trucks were involved in a collision that spilled gravel and caused significant traffic delays on Wednesday afternoon, August 13. The crash happened at approximately 2 p.m. on Ortega Highway near the Greenstone Materials recycling facility at 32502 Ortega Highway, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
CHP Officer Brian Kinsey reported that the incident began when one truck exited the facility’s driveway and collided with an eastbound truck traveling along Ortega Highway. The force of the crash pushed both vehicles into a third big-rig that was parked on the shoulder. The impact caused a large amount of gravel to spill across the roadway, creating a hazardous condition for other motorists.
The drivers of the trucks suffered minor injuries and received medical attention at the scene. Emergency crews, including tow operators and roadway maintenance teams, worked for several hours to remove the damaged vehicles and clear the debris. Gravel clean-up required extensive effort to ensure the road was safe for traffic once again.
By 6:30 p.m., only one lane remained open, and CHP officers were directing alternating traffic in both directions through the affected stretch of Ortega Highway. Motorists traveling through the area experienced long delays and were advised to use alternate routes until full clearance was completed.
Our thoughts are with those injured in this collision, and we wish them a full recovery.
Accidents involving large commercial trucks, such as big-rigs, can cause extensive roadway disruptions due to their size, weight, and cargo. Even minor collisions can result in significant debris or hazardous material spills, making cleanup operations lengthy and complex.
In this case, the combination of a facility driveway, active truck traffic, and a busy state highway created a challenging traffic environment. Drivers approaching such areas should reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, and remain alert for vehicles entering or exiting side roads or industrial driveways.
For professional truck drivers, adhering to proper exit and entry procedures is crucial in preventing such incidents. Checking mirrors, signaling early, and waiting for clear gaps in traffic can help reduce the risk of multi-vehicle crashes.
