San Joaquin, CA - Matthew Westberg Identified in Fatal Bike Crash on Jahant Rd

San Joaquin, CA (May 7, 2025) – A bicyclist who died as a result of a hit-and-run early Monday morning in San Joaquin County has been identified.

Matthew Westberg, 55, of Galt, died after he was hit from behind by an unidentified vehicle around 4:30 a.m. along eastbound Jahant Road, east of Highway 99, according to the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office. Westberg was knocked off his bicycle into an irrigation ditch and died from his injuries, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver left the scene after the crash, authorities confirm. Anyone with information can call the CHP Stockton office as their investigation proceeds in the interim.

We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man's family members.

Bicycle Accidents in California

California ranks among the top states for bicycle use, but it also reports a high number of bicycle-related crashes. Intersections like Rosecrans Avenue and La Mirada Boulevard are particularly dangerous due to mixed traffic, unclear yielding behavior, and driver inattention. Cyclists are especially vulnerable during collisions, suffering significant injuries even in low-speed impacts.

If you're ever involved in a bicycle crash, consider these important steps:

  • Always Get Checked by Medical Professionals: Even if you’re able to stand or speak, internal injuries or head trauma may not show symptoms right away. A full exam helps ensure nothing is missed.
  • Secure the Scene if Possible: If safe, try to take photos of the intersection, vehicle position, your bicycle, and any visible injuries. This evidence could be valuable later.
  • Report the Crash to Authorities: Make sure an official report is filed. It creates a legal record of the event and helps support your case.
  • Inspect Your Bicycle for Damage: Keep your bicycle and helmet as they were after the crash. Damage to them can support your claim and highlight the severity of the incident.
  • Consult an Attorney Before Filing a Claim: A lawyer can help calculate full compensation, including for future medical needs, and negotiate with insurance companies on your behalf.

If you or a loved one was hurt in a crash like this, it’s important to contact a trusted San Joaquin auto accident attorney right away. Legal help can ease the stress of recovery and help ensure those responsible are held accountable.
