San Carlos, CA (November 22, 2025) – A pedestrian was killed early Wednesday morning, November 19, after being struck by two vehicles in quick succession on Mission Gorge Road in the San Carlos area of San Diego, according to the San Diego Police Department.
The collision occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. in the 7500 block of Mission Gorge Road near Princess View Drive as the woman was crossing the roadway at a mid-block location. A 2021 Honda CR-V traveling through the area hit the woman. Authorities reported that the impact left her in the roadway.
Moments later, a second vehicle, identified as a 2022 Tesla Model Y, traveled over the pedestrian while she was lying down in the street as a result of the first impact. Emergency responders arrived soon after the reports of the crash and found the pedestrian with fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her identity has not been released, and officials have not provided information about next-of-kin notification. No additional details have been made public regarding the actions of either driver before the collision, and it remains unknown whether speed, visibility, or other roadway factors contributed to the sequence of impacts.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash. At this stage, police have not announced citations or determinations of fault, and the investigation remains active.
We extend our sincere condolences to the woman’s family and loved ones as they face this sudden and tragic loss.
Fatal pedestrian crashes occurring during early morning hours often involve reduced visibility and lower-than-normal pedestrian detection times for drivers. Mission Gorge Road is a major thoroughfare that carries steady vehicle traffic, and mid-block crossings may place pedestrians in areas where motorists do not expect foot travel. When a person is struck and left in the roadway, the risk of a secondary collision increases substantially, particularly if the second driver has limited time to perceive the hazard.
In incidents involving multiple strikes, authorities typically document vehicle positions, impact evidence, lighting conditions, and sightlines in the area. They may also review any available surveillance or traffic camera footage to determine the precise timeline and to assess whether either driver had a warning or a reasonable opportunity to avoid contact.
Investigations in these cases focus on how the pedestrian entered the traffic lane, the visibility conditions at the time, and whether roadway design played a role. Lighting, vehicle headlight performance, and the presence of crosswalks or warning signage are frequently evaluated. Authorities also assess driver attention and reaction timing, especially where two impacts occur within seconds.
California law allows surviving family members to pursue wrongful death claims when negligence contributes to a fatal pedestrian collision. These claims may address funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and the broader consequences of the death. Liability determinations depend heavily on the official investigation and the evidence developed from the scene.
