Sacramento, CA (September 9, 2025) – A worker was rescued on Monday morning, September 8, after fainting inside an underground fuel tank at a Costco gas station in Sacramento. According to officials with the Sacramento Fire Department, the incident occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. at the Costco located at 1600 Exposition Parkway.
The worker, who was employed by a third-party company, had entered the tank to perform cleaning operations before it was refilled with gasoline. Although the tank was empty at the time, fumes inside caused the man to lose consciousness while his colleagues observed from above.
Specialized rescue teams from the Sacramento Fire Department, including hazmat and technical rescue crews, responded to the scene. Firefighters hoisted the man out of the tank and immediately hosed him down to remove residual fumes before transporting him to a local hospital for further treatment. Officials explained that rinsing the worker was a necessary precaution to protect emergency responders from exposure while rendering medical care inside the confined space of an ambulance.
The man’s current condition has not been released, and further details regarding his recovery remain pending.
We extend our best wishes to the injured worker for a safe and complete recovery.
Industrial and commercial job sites frequently involve environments where hazardous materials and confined spaces create significant safety challenges. In this case, even though the tank was not filled with fuel, lingering vapors posed a serious health risk to the worker who entered the space. Situations like these highlight the dangers associated with confined space work, where limited ventilation and the presence of toxic fumes can quickly become life-threatening.
Fire departments often rely on specialized hazmat and technical rescue units for incidents of this nature. These teams are trained to manage the complexities of confined space rescues, including air quality monitoring, protective equipment usage, and victim extraction procedures. Their swift and coordinated response can be critical in preventing further harm to both the victim and other workers on-site.
Employers and contractors have a responsibility to ensure that workers are adequately trained and equipped to handle such risks. Safety protocols may include air testing before entry, continuous monitoring of atmospheric conditions, and the use of protective gear designed for confined environments.
Workers injured in industrial accidents may be eligible for compensation through workers’ compensation claims or other legal avenues. These benefits can help cover medical expenses, lost wages, and rehabilitation costs. In some cases, additional legal action may be necessary if third-party negligence contributed to unsafe conditions. Having experienced legal guidance can help injured workers and their families understand their rights, ensure proper documentation of the incident, and secure the support needed for recovery.
