Sacramento, CA - Woman Fatally Struck by Multiple Vehicles on Calvine Rd

Sacramento, CA (April 11, 2025) – A woman lost her life early Friday morning after being hit by multiple vehicles near the northbound on-ramp to Highway 99 in Sacramento, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred around 4:45 a.m. on April 11 near Calvine Road, just east of the Highway 99 interchange. CHP officials say the woman was walking in the roadway when a man driving a Honda Accord struck her while heading west on Calvine Road. After the initial collision, the driver reportedly attempted to back up the vehicle, and a Ford Taurus approaching the area then hit the woman a second time.

Emergency responders arrived to find the woman suffering from life-threatening injuries. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released pending family notification.

Authorities stated that no other vehicles were involved, and there was no indication that alcohol played a role in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to understand the full circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the woman who lost her life.

Pedestrian Accidents in California

Pedestrian fatalities are a growing concern across California, with early morning hours presenting heightened dangers due to lower visibility and reduced traffic awareness. In 2023, California recorded over 1,100 pedestrian deaths, and urban areas like Sacramento continue to see a high rate of these incidents, particularly near busy intersections and highway access points.

Crashes involving pedestrians often have heartbreaking outcomes. Here are several contributing factors and challenges in such cases:

  • Limited Visibility: Many pedestrian accidents happen in the dark or during dawn, when lighting is low and drivers may not expect to see someone on the road. Headlights may also fail to fully illuminate a pedestrian from certain angles.
  • Unsignalized Areas: Pedestrians crossing outside of designated crosswalks or at on-ramp areas face added risk. Drivers may not slow down in these zones or be looking out for people on foot.
  • Multiple Vehicle Involvement: Secondary collisions, like in this case, are common when an initial crash leads to confusion or lack of visibility for oncoming drivers. These situations can complicate investigations and liability.
  • Trauma and Grief: Families left behind after a fatal pedestrian crash face immense emotional and financial burdens, from funeral costs to loss of companionship or income.
  • Legal Complexity: Fatal pedestrian crashes often require detailed investigations, including witness statements, vehicle data, and accident reconstruction. Legal representation is vital for holding responsible parties accountable.
