Sacramento, CA (June 19, 2025) – An investigation is underway after a man and his dog died after a hit-and-run in a Sacramento County shopping center parking lot early Wednesday morning.
Metro Fire of Sacramento says crews were called to the scene along Antelope Road around 4:30 a.m. First responders found that a man had been struck by a car. That man was soon pronounced dead, firefighters say.
The man, whose name has not been released at this time, appears to have been walking his dog in the parking lot when he was hit. The dog also died, firefighters say.
Whoever hit the pair fled the scene, authorities say. The California Highway Patrol said the driver parked their vehicle and took off running. No description of the suspect or their vehicle has been released at this time. However, authorities have requested witnesses to come forward with any pertinent information as they investigate.
Our deepest condolences are with the deceased victim's loved ones.
Hit-and-run crashes have surged across California, particularly in dense urban hubs like downtown Los Angeles. When a driver speeds away without stopping, victims often wait longer for medical aid and face an uphill battle to locate the at-fault motorist—conditions that frequently turn serious injuries into life-altering ones.
Key steps for anyone injured in a hit-and-run include:
Get medical care immediately. Even if you think you’re fine, some trauma (such as concussions or internal injuries) may not surface for hours or days.
File a police report right away. The sooner you provide officers with details—vehicle color, partial plate numbers, direction of travel—the better the odds of tracking down the driver.
Secure video and witnesses. Ask nearby businesses or homeowners about surveillance cameras and record contact information for anyone who saw the collision.
Notify your insurer. Many policies include uninsured or underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage that can pay medical bills and vehicle repairs when the culprit can’t be found. Review your coverage with your lawyer to understand all available benefits.
Consult a lawyer before accepting any settlement. Insurers may move quickly to close the claim for as little as possible; legal counsel can evaluate the full value of your losses and handle negotiations while you heal.
A knowledgeable hit-and-run attorney can also work with law enforcement, subpoena surveillance footage, and coordinate accident-reconstruction experts to strengthen your case. Most personal injury firms offer free consultations and operate on a contingency basis, so you owe no fee unless they secure compensation for you. Reaching out early preserves critical evidence and maximizes your chances of holding the responsible party and any insurers accountable.
