Nevada City, CA (December 20, 2025) – Authorities are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred on December 19 on Highway 49 near the South Yuba River Bridge, where a Tesla left the roadway and went down an embankment, resulting in one death and serious injuries to three others.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to the scene and located a Tesla that had traveled approximately 15 feet down an embankment near the bridge area. Investigators determined that a man from Grass Valley was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. Three young passengers were also inside the car.
Authorities confirmed that one young boy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released. The remaining three occupants were transported to a hospital with major injuries. Officials stated that all three were expected to survive.
The California Highway Patrol reported that speed was a contributing factor in the crash. Officials also noted that it was raining heavily at the time of the incident. Despite the severity of the collision, Highway 49 was not closed following the crash.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities stated that part of the investigation will include determining whether the vehicle was operating in autopilot mode at the time of the crash. Officials indicated that vehicle data will need to be retrieved to assist with this determination.
The crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Additional information may be released as investigators complete their review of the vehicle data and other evidence related to the collision.
Our sincere condolences go out to the family of the young boy who lost his life, and we also wish the other injured victims a swift recovery.
Single-vehicle crashes involving embankments often result in severe or fatal injuries due to the sudden loss of control and the forces involved when a vehicle leaves the roadway. Occupants may sustain traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, internal injuries, and complex fractures, even when safety systems are present. Young passengers are particularly vulnerable in these incidents.
Survivors of serious crashes frequently require emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, and extended rehabilitation. Major injuries may lead to long-term medical needs, missed time from school or work, and lasting physical limitations. Families may also face significant emotional and financial challenges in the aftermath of such events.
Investigations into crashes involving advanced vehicle technology can be especially complex. Authorities may analyze speed, weather conditions, roadway design, and driver actions, along with electronic vehicle data. Determining whether driver-assistance features were engaged is often a critical part of understanding how the crash occurred.
When a traffic collision results in death or serious injury, affected families may have options to pursue compensation. Claims may address medical expenses, future care needs, lost income, funeral and burial costs, and other losses recognized under the law. These options are intended to help families manage the long-term consequences of a devastating incident.
Understanding available legal options can be especially important while investigations are ongoing and recovery is still underway. Reviewing official reports and preserving evidence may play an important role in protecting the rights of those affected.
