North Highlands, CA (April 21, 2025) – A bicyclist is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle in North Highlands on Monday evening, April 21, officials said.
According to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, the crash occurred on Madison Avenue near Jackson Street around 9:00 p.m. The bicyclist was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, Metro Fire confirmed. It is unknown what caused the crash. The California Highway Patrol officers were on the scene, investigating the crash. However, witnesses were asked to come forward as soon as possible.
We hope the injured cyclist recovers quickly and fully.
Cycling is a popular and eco-friendly way to commute across California’s cities, but it also comes with risks. In 2022, the state reported over 10,000 bicycle-related injuries, many of which occurred in urban areas. While improved bike lanes have helped reduce some incidents, crashes between cyclists and vehicles remain a serious concern across the state.
Here are some things to keep in mind about bicycle accidents and the risks involved:
Common Crash Locations: Most bicycle accidents happen at intersections or when vehicles are turning. Drivers may not always see cyclists, especially if they’re turning right or left at the same time as a bicyclist is crossing.
Injuries Can Be Severe: Unlike vehicle occupants, cyclists have little to no protection during a crash. Injuries often include fractures, head trauma, and road rash. Helmets help, but many injuries still require long recovery periods.
Right-of-Way Confusion: Many crashes stem from drivers or cyclists misunderstanding who has the right-of-way. Education on traffic rules can help, but awareness from both parties is key to preventing accidents.
Lack of Visibility: Cyclists are harder to spot, especially during early morning or evening hours. Wearing reflective gear and using lights can reduce risk, but drivers must also remain alert and check blind spots carefully.
Post-Accident Stress: For many cyclists, getting back on the road after an accident is emotionally difficult. The psychological effects can linger long after physical wounds have healed.
If you or someone you care about has been hurt in a bicycle crash, it's critical to speak with a North Highlands personal injury attorney as soon as possible. An attorney can help protect your legal rights and ensure the full scope of your injuries and losses is considered when pursuing compensation. Timing matters, especially when it comes to collecting evidence and dealing with insurance.
