Pedestrian Accidents in California

California consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of pedestrian accidents. In 2023 alone, thousands of pedestrians were hurt or killed in traffic incidents statewide. Urban areas like Sacramento County tend to see a higher rate of these incidents, especially at busy intersections where pedestrians and drivers share space.

When pedestrians are involved in crashes, injuries are often severe. Below are some common types of injuries sustained in pedestrian accidents:

  • Head Injuries: Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer traumatic brain injuries, ranging from concussions to more serious damage. These injuries can have long-term cognitive and emotional effects.
  • Fractures and Broken Bones: The force of impact can lead to fractures in the legs, arms, ribs, or pelvis. Recovery may require surgery, physical therapy, and time off from work or school.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Sprains, bruises, and muscle tears can occur even at lower speeds. These injuries might not appear serious initially, but can cause lingering pain and mobility issues.
  • Spinal Injuries: Damage to the spine can result in nerve issues or, in the most severe cases, paralysis. Immediate medical evaluation is critical following any back or neck trauma.
  • Internal Injuries: Collisions can cause internal bleeding or organ damage, which may not show immediate symptoms. These injuries are dangerous and require emergency care.
