Merced, CA – Fatal Head-On Collision on SR-59 South of Oakdale Rd.

Merced, CA (October 8, 2025) – Authorities responded early Tuesday morning to a fatal head-on collision involving a sedan and a dump truck on State Route 59, south of Oakdale Road in Merced. The crash occurred at approximately 6:21 a.m. and resulted in the death of one driver.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Merced Communications Center received reports of a multi-vehicle crash shortly after 6 a.m. Upon arrival, responding officers determined that the incident involved two vehicles—a 2012 Ford Fusion sedan and a 2026 Western dump truck. The preliminary investigation revealed that the Ford sedan, driven by an unidentified adult male, was traveling southbound on SR-59 at an unknown speed when, for reasons still under investigation, it veered across the centerline into the northbound lane.

The sedan collided head-on with the northbound dump truck, driven by a 30-year-old man from Merced who had been traveling at approximately 55 mph. The impact caused the dump truck to leave the roadway and come to rest on the west shoulder, while the sedan was left disabled in the southbound lane. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and confirmed that the driver of the Ford sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the site. The dump truck driver was not injured and cooperated with investigating officers.

Authorities stated that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be contributing factors in this collision. Traffic in the area was temporarily impacted as CHP units investigated the crash and coordinated the removal of the damaged vehicles.
