Manteca, CA (June 30, 2025) – A person died after a street sweeper collided with a big rig Monday morning in Manteca, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.
The crash occurred on June 30, around 8:27 a.m., on the southbound Highway 99 off-ramp to Lathrop Road. The driver of the street sweeper was unrestrained at the time of the crash, which resulted in critical injuries. They were taken to a nearby hospital, where they later died, CHP said. A passenger in the big rig reportedly suffered mild injuries, but EMTs assessed the person at the site. An investigation is currently active and being managed by law enforcement. Anyone with information related to this incident can call the CHP.
We send our best wishes for a fast and full recovery to those who were injured.
Collisions at or near highway exits can be particularly hazardous because drivers may not anticipate sudden slowing or merging. Intersections like Highway 120 and Main Street typically see steady traffic, and the added complexity of an off-ramp can catch some motorists off guard. A lapse in attention, misjudgment of distance, or aggressive lane changes can swiftly result in a crash.
Beyond immediate injuries, victims may face long-term health consequences if the impact is severe. Neck, back, and head injuries are common, and some individuals require extensive rehabilitation to regain their mobility. Financial burdens also arise, including hospital bills, car repair or replacement costs, and lost income during recovery. If the collision leads to permanent disability, the victim may need lifelong care or face career challenges.
Establishing fault in intersection accidents often requires carefully examining the situation. Police and insurance adjusters might look at traffic camera footage, witness accounts, and the positioning of vehicles at the point of contact. When multiple lanes converge, it can be difficult to determine who moved improperly or at what point the right-of-way was violated. Drivers sometimes dispute the sequence of events, underscoring the need for objective evidence.
