Madison Heights, CA (April 30, 2025) – An 82-year-old motorcyclist was killed Tuesday in Madison Heights after his vehicle was struck by an SUV in Madison Heights, police said.
According to Lt. David Koehler of the Madison Heights Police Department, the crash happened at around 2:00 p.m. on John R Road near Ajax Drive. Officers subsequently determined the SUV driver, a 79-year-old woman, was turning left from southbound John R onto a private drive and struck the motorcycle headed northbound on John R.
The motorcyclist, Daniel Conrad of Algonac, was transported to Henry Ford Hospital in Madison Heights, where he was pronounced dead. Koehler said the SUV driver was cooperating with the investigation, and alcohol doesn’t appear to have been a factor in the crash. Anyone with further information on the incident is asked to contact Koehler as the investigation proceeds.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim.
Motorcycles allow for agility and freedom on the road, yet they also lack the protective shell that cars provide. Even low-speed impacts can result in severe or life-altering injuries for motorcyclists. Common issues include fractures, lacerations, and head trauma. In this particular case, the officer’s protective gear and swift emergency response may have limited the severity of his wounds.
Motorcycle accidents often stem from drivers failing to see or yield to smaller vehicles, especially in high-traffic or unpredictable situations. Lane-splitting, while legal under specific conditions in California, can also spark conflicts if drivers change lanes abruptly or do not check their blind spots. Additionally, speeding on either party’s part amplifies the risk of catastrophic harm. Investigators typically review road conditions, vehicle positions, and witness statements to assign fault.
When injuries occur, medical expenses and lost income can pile up, leaving victims or their families in financial turmoil. Securing fair compensation requires demonstrating that another party’s negligence directly contributed to the collision. This can entail obtaining traffic camera footage, dashcam videos, or police findings. In the case of law enforcement officers, departmental reports and official records can carry significant weight, but every scenario differs.
Partnering with an attorney knowledgeable about motorcycle crashes can help victims recoup hospital costs, rehabilitation fees, and other losses. Legal professionals often negotiate with insurance companies on the client’s behalf, striving to ensure a favorable settlement that addresses both current and future needs.
