Madera, CA (November 22, 2025) – A man was killed after being struck by a train on Wednesday afternoon, November 19, in the area of Gateway Drive and Third Street, according to the Madera Police Department. Officers were dispatched to the railroad tracks at about 2:45 p.m. following a report of a pedestrian hit by a passing train. When responders arrived, they found the man near the rail line and confirmed he had died at the scene. Authorities have not released additional identifying information.
Detectives reported no indications of foul play. The incident remains under investigation as officers work to determine how the pedestrian came to be in the train’s path. Investigators are expected to review train operating data and document sightlines along the corridor.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Further details may be released after the preliminary review is complete.
We extend our sincere condolences to the man’s family and loved ones as they face this sudden loss.
Train-pedestrian collisions are uncommon but frequently fatal because trains are heavy, travel at sustained speeds, and require a long distance to stop. Once a person is on or near active tracks, crews have limited ability to avoid impact, even when emergency braking is used. In many cases, the danger is compounded by the quiet approach of modern trains and the limited visibility along certain stretches of track. For that reason, rail safety agencies consistently emphasize that pedestrians should never assume a train can slow or swerve in time to prevent a collision.
Rail corridors near city streets can create informal access points that are not intended for public use. As a result, investigations often focus on where a pedestrian entered the right of way, whether fencing or warning signs were present, and whether the approach of the train was reasonably visible. Authorities may also look at lighting and other environmental conditions that could affect awareness.
Families who lose a relative in a train incident may have the option to pursue a wrongful death claim if unsafe conditions or another party’s negligence contributed to the death. Such claims can seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and related losses under California law.
