Madera, CA (September 16, 2025) – A devastating collision involving a family minivan and a big rig claimed the lives of three children and left two others with major injuries on Saturday evening, September 13, in Madera County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. at the intersection of Avenue 7 and Road 24. Investigators reported that the mother of the children was driving the minivan when she reportedly failed to observe a stop sign. The minivan proceeded into the intersection, where it collided with a big rig truck. The impact was so severe that the minivan split in half.
Authorities confirmed that three children inside the minivan—a 17-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy, and a 6-year-old girl—were pronounced deceased at the scene. Two additional passengers in the vehicle sustained major injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver of the big rig was also hospitalized for evaluation and care.
The force of the crash caused a diesel fuel spill into a nearby canal. Emergency crews were dispatched to manage cleanup operations and secure the area to prevent further hazards.
Authorities have stated that the driver of the minivan may face criminal charges pending the outcome of the investigation. The California Highway Patrol continues to review all contributing factors in this case.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased victims. We also wish those hurt a rapid recovery.
Collisions between passenger vehicles and large commercial trucks frequently result in catastrophic outcomes due to the size and weight of big rigs. When a smaller vehicle collides with a commercial truck, the impact forces can lead to devastating injuries or fatalities, as seen in this tragic crash. Beyond the human toll, such collisions often create additional hazards, including hazardous material or fuel spills that require significant emergency response resources.
For families who lose loved ones in fatal truck accidents, the aftermath is both emotionally and financially overwhelming. Funeral and burial costs, medical bills, and the sudden loss of income and companionship can leave families struggling to cope.
California law allows surviving relatives to pursue wrongful death claims, which may provide compensation for these losses and help families seek accountability. In cases where serious injuries occur, victims may be entitled to personal injury claims to cover medical care, rehabilitation, and long-term treatment needs.
Truck accidents also highlight the critical importance of roadway safety, particularly at intersections with stop signs or heavy truck traffic. Drivers of smaller vehicles must exercise heightened caution, while truck operators are required to follow strict safety regulations to reduce the likelihood of collisions.
