Los Angeles, CA (October 8, 2025) – A tow truck driver was struck and killed early Tuesday morning, October 7, by a hit-and-run driver while assisting a disabled motorist on the southbound lanes of the Harbor (110) Freeway near the West Florence Avenue exit in South Los Angeles. The incident prompted extended lane closures lasting nearly six hours.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the collision occurred at approximately 1:35 a.m. when the victim was outside his tow truck helping a stranded driver along the right shoulder. A passing southbound vehicle struck the man and continued driving without stopping. Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded and pronounced the victim dead at the scene. His name and age have not yet been released pending family notification.
Authorities later located the suspect’s vehicle, though the driver remains at large. CHP officers continue to gather evidence, review roadway surveillance footage, and interview witnesses in an effort to identify and apprehend the responsible individual. The agency confirmed that a Sigalert was issued, closing all southbound lanes of the Harbor Freeway at the Florence Avenue exit for several hours. Two lanes reopened shortly before 5:40 a.m., and full traffic flow was restored after investigators completed their on-site examination.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the tow truck driver whose life was tragically lost in this incident.
Fatal hit-and-run accidents are a growing concern across Los Angeles, particularly on high-speed corridors such as the Harbor Freeway. These collisions often occur in low-visibility conditions or when drivers fail to slow down near emergency or roadside assistance vehicles. California’s “Move Over” law requires motorists to reduce speed or change lanes when approaching stationary vehicles displaying flashing lights, including tow trucks, law enforcement, and emergency responders.
When a hit-and-run occurs, investigators must rely on physical evidence, eyewitness statements, and nearby surveillance footage to identify the suspect. Such cases can be complex, often involving both criminal charges and civil claims to ensure accountability and justice for victims and their families.
For those left behind after a fatal crash, the emotional and financial toll can be immense. Surviving family members may face medical costs, funeral expenses, and loss of income. In situations involving negligence or unlawful conduct, they may pursue a wrongful death claim to seek compensation and hold the at-fault party responsible.
