Los Angeles, CA (November 16, 2025) – A person died on Sunday, November 16, following a residential fire that broke out in a row of bungalows in the Hyde Park neighborhood. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the blaze was reported at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the 6000 block of South Brynhurst Street, located south of West Slauson Avenue and west of Crenshaw Boulevard. Responding crews observed smoke coming from one of the units upon arrival and immediately began fire suppression operations.
Firefighters worked rapidly to contain the blaze and were able to extinguish the fire within just over 20 minutes, preventing the flames from spreading to adjacent residences. During a methodical search conducted inside the affected bungalow shortly after 5:00 p.m., firefighters discovered a deceased individual. The person’s age and gender had not yet been determined at the time of initial reporting.
LAFD officials stated that the department’s Arson Section will handle the investigation into the cause of the fire. Parallel to the fire investigation, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner will oversee the identification of the deceased and determine the official cause of death.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this tragic incident.
Residential fires continue to pose significant risks to communities throughout Los Angeles due to the city’s diverse mixture of older structures, densely populated neighborhoods, and varying building conditions. Fire incidents in multi-unit housing areas, such as the row of bungalows involved in this incident, carry heightened risk since flames can spread rapidly between connected structures if not contained quickly. The timely response and coordinated actions of firefighters play a critical role in minimizing property damage and preventing additional loss of life.
Fire investigations focus on identifying ignition sources, evaluating electrical systems, examining heating appliances, and reviewing structural conditions to understand how a fire began and spread.
Investigators also consider environmental factors, material combustibility, and potential human activity at the time of the incident. Determining the cause supports broader safety strategies aimed at reducing fire incidents and strengthening prevention efforts within residential neighborhoods.
Emergency responders follow strict protocols to secure fire scenes, conduct interior searches, and prevent further hazards. Fire crews examine for hidden fire pockets, structural instability, and any dangerous conditions that could reignite. Law enforcement and other agencies provide support by managing traffic, assisting residents, and safeguarding the perimeter while investigators work.
Local fire agencies and safety officials continue to encourage fire prevention practices, including regular smoke alarm maintenance, safe use of heating equipment, and proper handling of electrical devices. Public education campaigns and community outreach programs play an important role in reducing fire-related risks and promoting awareness among residents in high-density areas.
