Los Angeles, CA - One Dead, Two Hurt in Pedestrian Accident on 110 Fwy at First St

Los Angeles, CA (February 1, 2025) – Authorities reported that a pedestrian was killed and a driver hospitalized after an early morning crash on the 110 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles on February 1.

According to the California Highway Patrol, it happened just after 6:30 a.m. on southbound lanes near First Street. Officers arrived at the scene and learned that the pedestrian, only identified as a man in his 40s, was struck by a black Honda Civic. He was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

The driver of the Honda, also not identified by investigators, remained at the scene to cooperate with CHP's investigation. He was hospitalized in fair condition. A second person, whom police say was a passenger inside the car, declined transport to a hospital, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. They say that the victim was possibly struck by "multiple other vehicles" but did not provide further details as an investigation remains active at this time.

We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased victim's loved ones. Our thoughts are also with the injured victims, and we hope they make a full recovery.

Pedestrian Accidents in California

California consistently ranks among the states with the highest rates of pedestrian accidents. Urban centers such as Los Angeles see a notable rise in these incidents, driven by high traffic volumes, densely populated areas, and increasing instances of distracted driving. Tragically, thousands of pedestrians are injured each year, with many facing severe, long-term, or life-altering consequences.

Pedestrian safety is a growing concern, especially in bustling metropolitan areas where foot traffic intersects with busy roadways. Here are some key factors contributing to these accidents:

  • Distracted Driving: Activities like texting, talking on the phone, eating, or adjusting GPS devices take a driver’s attention off the road, increasing the likelihood of missing pedestrians, especially at intersections or crosswalks.
  • Unsafe Crossings: Pedestrians are often at greater risk when crossing streets without designated crosswalks or in areas with inadequate signage, poor lighting, or obstructed visibility.
  • Driver Impairment: Alcohol and drug use continue to be significant contributors to pedestrian-related crashes. Impaired drivers have slower reaction times, reduced coordination, and poor judgment, putting pedestrians in extreme danger.
  • Urban Environments: Cities like Los Angeles present unique challenges due to their high-density neighborhoods, frequent intersections, and fast-moving traffic. These conditions often leave little room for error, making vigilance crucial for both drivers and pedestrians.

The aftermath of a pedestrian accident can be devastating, both physically and emotionally, for victims and their families.
