Los Angeles, CA (November 3, 2025) – Two people lost their lives and five others sustained injuries after a residential fire broke out on Saturday, November 1, at a home located in the 10900 block of North Scoville Avenue in the Sunland area of Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the blaze was first reported at approximately 11:10 p.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the residence engulfed in heavy flames. Crews immediately initiated fire suppression efforts and rescue operations, successfully extinguishing the fire within about 30 minutes. During their search, first responders located one person inside the home and transported them to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Tragically, two additional individuals were found inside but were beyond medical aid and pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities reported that one of the victims, an 87-year-old man, was discovered outside the home suffering from critical burn injuries. He was rushed to a hospital for further care. Four other adults located outside the residence were treated for smoke inhalation, while one person declined medical transport. In total, more than a dozen residents were displaced as a result of the blaze.
Officials said it remains unclear whether the single-story home, built in 1948, was equipped with functional smoke alarms. Firefighters at the scene reported not hearing any alarms upon arrival. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by LAFD’s Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section, which will determine the origin and contributing factors behind the incident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims who lost their lives in this tragic fire.
Residential fires remain one of the most devastating types of emergencies faced by Los Angeles residents, often leading to loss of life, significant injuries, and displacement. The Sunland community, with its older housing structures, faces particular risks due to aging electrical systems and outdated fire safety features. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoke alarms reduce the risk of fire-related death by more than 50%, yet many homes remain unequipped or have non-functional detectors.
In many cases, victims of residential fires suffer severe burns, smoke inhalation, or long-term trauma requiring extensive recovery and financial resources. Legal assistance can play a crucial role in helping families understand their rights and pursue potential claims related to property damage, negligence, or product liability in the aftermath of such tragedies.
