Long Beach, CA (September 1, 2025) – A man died early Monday morning, September 1, after being struck by a vehicle while riding a scooter in Long Beach. The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) reported that the collision occurred shortly after 3:00 a.m. at the intersection of 7th Street and Federation Drive.
When officers arrived, they found the victim unconscious in the roadway. A bystander and police officers attempted to provide aid until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived. Paramedics transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
According to the preliminary investigation, the man was riding a scooter outside of a marked crosswalk when an eastbound 2016 Hyundai Accent struck him. The driver, a 28-year-old man from Laguna Beach, remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators.
LBPD confirmed that speed, distracted driving, and impairment have been ruled out as contributing factors in this crash. The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification of family members by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The LBPD Collision Investigation Detail continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this fatal collision. Authorities are asking any witnesses with information to come forward. Detective Ashley Van Holland is handling the case, and tips may also be submitted anonymously through LA Crime Stoppers.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the man who lost his life in this tragic accident.
Collisions involving scooters and vehicles are becoming increasingly common in urban areas as more people opt for alternative forms of transportation. Scooters, much like bicycles, provide little to no protection in the event of a crash. When a rider collides with a car, the results can be catastrophic, often leading to serious injuries or fatalities.
The injuries sustained in scooter accidents often include traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, internal bleeding, and spinal cord damage. Victims who survive may face long recoveries, requiring surgery, physical therapy, and rehabilitation. Families are frequently left to bear emotional and financial hardships, from hospital bills to the sudden loss of a loved one.
Determining liability in scooter crashes requires a careful review of all available evidence. Investigators look at roadway design, traffic signals, vehicle speed, driver behavior, and whether the scooter rider followed traffic laws. Even when speed or impairment are ruled out, as in this case, other contributing factors—such as visibility or failure to yield—may still be considered.
When negligence is a factor, victims and their families may pursue legal claims to seek compensation for their losses. Wrongful death claims can cover funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and loss of financial support. Injured riders may pursue personal injury claims for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. These legal avenues help provide accountability while easing the financial burden families face.
