El Cajon, CA (August 18, 2025) – A pedestrian lost his life early Sunday morning after being struck by a suspected drunk driver in El Cajon. The deadly crash happened around 1:00 a.m., August 17, near the intersection of Chase Avenue and Avocado Avenue.
According to the El Cajon Police Department, officers arrived to find a vehicle had hit both a fire hydrant and a power pole. At the same time, they discovered a man who had been pushing a shopping cart when he was struck. Paramedics rushed to the scene but were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead where the crash occurred.
Investigators determined that the driver fled the scene before police arrived. Officers later located and arrested the suspected motorist, who now faces charges related to driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of a fatal crash. Police confirmed the driver remains in custody while the investigation continues.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim. The crash forced temporary closures near the intersection as crews worked to repair damage to the hydrant and power pole and to document the scene.
We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones as they grieve this tragic loss.
Drunk driving continues to be one of the most dangerous threats on California roadways. In cities like El Cajon, DUI crashes often lead to catastrophic injuries or deaths, especially when pedestrians are involved. A single impaired decision behind the wheel can change lives forever, leaving families devastated and communities shaken.
Pedestrian accidents are particularly severe because individuals have no protection against the force of a moving vehicle. Victims often suffer fatal injuries on impact, and even survivors can face lifelong consequences, including traumatic brain injuries, fractures, and internal organ damage. These tragedies highlight the importance of preventing impaired driving before it happens.
Law enforcement agencies in El Cajon and across San Diego County have increased patrols to identify and arrest impaired drivers. Public safety campaigns remind residents of the importance of using designated drivers, rideshare services, or public transportation after consuming alcohol. Despite these efforts, DUI-related crashes still claim lives far too often.
Preventing these accidents requires vigilance from the entire community. Friends and family members can play a role by discouraging impaired individuals from getting behind the wheel. Businesses that serve alcohol also share responsibility by ensuring customers do not drive while intoxicated.
For families affected by DUI crashes, the emotional and financial challenges are overwhelming. Along with grief, they may face sudden funeral expenses, medical bills, and lost income. Legal guidance can help families hold responsible parties accountable and seek compensation for the losses they have suffered.
