El Cajon, CA – Pedestrian Killed in Suspected DUI Crash at Chase Ave

El Cajon, CA (August 18, 2025) – A pedestrian lost his life early Sunday morning after being struck by a suspected drunk driver in El Cajon. The deadly crash happened around 1:00 a.m., August 17,  near the intersection of Chase Avenue and Avocado Avenue.

According to the El Cajon Police Department, officers arrived to find a vehicle had hit both a fire hydrant and a power pole. At the same time, they discovered a man who had been pushing a shopping cart when he was struck. Paramedics rushed to the scene but were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead where the crash occurred.

Investigators determined that the driver fled the scene before police arrived. Officers later located and arrested the suspected motorist, who now faces charges related to driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of a fatal crash. Police confirmed the driver remains in custody while the investigation continues.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim. The crash forced temporary closures near the intersection as crews worked to repair damage to the hydrant and power pole and to document the scene.
