Citrus Heights, CA (September 16, 2025) – A 28-year-old motorcyclist from Roseville was killed on Monday evening, September 15, following a police pursuit that ended in a crash at the intersection of Antelope Road and Mariposa Avenue in Citrus Heights.
Authorities identified the deceased as Devin James Newton, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. The incident began at approximately 8:20 p.m. when Newton reportedly failed to yield during a traffic stop attempt near Antelope Road and Wonder Street. Officers stated that the motorcyclist fled the stop, running red lights, disregarding stop signs, and turning off his headlights while attempting to evade law enforcement.
The pursuit involved both ground officers and aerial support from a Sacramento Police Department helicopter, relaying information. Despite coordinated efforts, the chase culminated in a severe collision when Newton’s motorcycle struck a car. The impact ejected Newton from his bike. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle involved was not injured. The Citrus Heights Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is reviewing the sequence of events to determine all contributing factors.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Newton during this difficult time.
Motorcycle accidents often result in catastrophic or fatal injuries due to the limited protection motorcycles provide compared to other vehicles. High speeds, lack of protective barriers, and roadway hazards increase the risks faced by motorcyclists. Collisions, particularly those occurring during pursuits or involving multiple vehicles, frequently lead to traumatic injuries such as head trauma, spinal cord injuries, and internal damage.
The consequences of fatal motorcycle crashes extend beyond the immediate tragedy. Families may experience significant emotional distress along with financial burdens related to funeral expenses, medical bills, and the loss of future income.
California law allows surviving relatives to pursue wrongful death claims to recover compensation for these losses, providing support as they navigate the aftermath of a sudden loss.
This case also highlights the broader challenges of balancing public safety with high-speed pursuits. While law enforcement agencies follow pursuit protocols to minimize risks, accidents can still occur with devastating outcomes. Awareness of the potential dangers of fleeing from police stops underscores the importance of compliance with traffic laws and lawful directives to prevent tragic incidents.
