Burbank, CA (September 28, 2025) – Authorities responded on Saturday evening, September 27, after a pedestrian was struck and killed while attempting to cross the Golden State (5) Freeway in Burbank.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the crash at approximately 7:09 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the freeway near Verdugo Avenue. Initial accounts indicate that a male pedestrian was attempting to cross the lanes when he was struck by a passing vehicle, leaving him down in the No. 1 lane.
Witnesses at the scene stated that multiple vehicles stopped following the impact. One vehicle reportedly positioned itself to shield the pedestrian from further danger while emergency responders were en route. It remains unclear whether the motorist who initially struck the individual remained at the scene of the incident.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. Officials confirmed that the collision led to significant traffic disruptions. At 7:40 p.m., CHP issued a SigAlert closing the HOV lane and lanes 1 and 2 of the freeway. Southbound traffic was directed through lanes 3 and 4 until the roadway could be cleared. The investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains active.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim during this tragic time.
Pedestrian accidents remain a critical public safety concern throughout California, including busy freeway systems such as the Golden State Freeway in Burbank. Incidents of this nature are often severe due to the speed of vehicles and the limited ability of drivers to avoid a person in the roadway.
According to state traffic data, pedestrian fatalities represent a significant percentage of overall roadway deaths each year. Freeways pose a particularly high risk, as they are not designed for pedestrian use and drivers often have little warning to react when someone enters the lanes.
The consequences of such crashes are devastating. Families of victims face not only the immediate emotional loss but also the financial and legal challenges that arise following a fatal accident. Funeral expenses, lost income, and the sudden void left in a household can be overwhelming.
California law allows surviving family members to pursue wrongful death claims when negligence or unlawful actions contribute to a fatal collision. These claims may provide compensation for medical costs, funeral expenses, lost earnings, and other damages that result from the incident.
Legal representation is often essential in these cases to ensure that the rights of surviving family members are protected and that they receive the compensation they are entitled to under the law.
