The collision occurred at the intersection of Nelson and Height Streets. We hope the injured pedestrian makes a full and fast recovery.

Pedestrian Accidents in California

California has one of the highest rates of pedestrian accidents in the country. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), thousands of pedestrians are injured or killed each year due to traffic collisions. Urban areas like Bakersfield and beyond see frequent incidents due to high foot traffic and busy intersections.

Common causes of pedestrian accidents include:

  • Driver Inattention – Many pedestrian crashes happen because drivers fail to notice people crossing the road. Looking at a phone, adjusting the radio, or simply being distracted by traffic can lead to devastating consequences.
  • Failure to Yield – Pedestrians have the right-of-way at many intersections and crosswalks, yet drivers often ignore traffic laws. This can lead to serious or even fatal injuries when vehicles fail to stop in time.
  • Speeding – The faster a vehicle is moving, the less time a driver has to react. Higher speeds also increase the force of impact, making injuries more severe for pedestrians involved in crashes.
  • Poor Visibility – Low lighting, weather conditions, and obstructed views make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians. Many accidents happen at night when visibility is reduced, increasing the risk for those walking near roadways.
  • Impaired Driving – Alcohol or drug impairment significantly affects reaction time and judgment. Drivers under the influence are more likely to miss traffic signals or fail to see a pedestrian in time to stop.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a pedestrian accident, it is essential to seek legal guidance. Insurance companies may try to minimize payouts, leaving victims struggling with medical bills, lost wages, and long-term recovery costs. Taking legal action as soon as possible can help protect your rights and ensure that responsible parties are held accountable.
