Bakersfield, CA (February 3, 2025) – A Buttonwillow teen was identified after being involved in a fatal wreck over the weekend on Highway 58.
Mariana Lizbeth Rivera Acosta, 19, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet east on Highway 58 when she was struck and killed after another vehicle veered into her, according to the CHP (California Highway Patrol). Investigators say a 22-year-old male was driving a 2023 Dodge westbound on Highway 58, passed an uninvolved vehicle in the eastbound lanes, and crashed head-on into Acosta. The crash occurred just west of I-5 at about 5:50 p.m. on Sunday.
A female passenger in the Dodge was transported to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries, and three minors in the vehicle sustained minor injuries, according to CHP. Authorities have not yet released information about the victims' current conditions; however, the California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident to determine the cause of the collision.
We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of Mariana Lizbeth Rivera Acosta. Our thoughts are also with the injured victims and their family members. We hope for their full recovery at this time.
California's extensive highway system is vital for transportation but also presents significant risks for motorists. Highway accidents, particularly multi-vehicle collisions, are common and can lead to severe injuries, fatalities, and extensive property damage. Understanding the factors contributing to these accidents and the legal avenues available is crucial for affected individuals, including but not limited to high speeds, driver fatigue, distracted driving, and, oftentimes, weather conditions. For instance, rain, fog, and other adverse weather conditions can reduce visibility and road traction.
California operates under a comparative negligence system, allowing victims to recover damages even if they are partially at fault, with compensation adjusted according to their degree of responsibility.
Protecting your legal rights after an accident requires prompt action. In California, the statute of limitations for personal injury claims is two years from the date of the incident. Consulting with an experienced Bakersfield personal injury attorney as soon as possible is essential to navigating the complexities of multi-vehicle crash cases and ensuring fair compensation for your losses.
