Bakersfield, CA - Fatal Pedestrian Collision on Edison Hwy Under Inquiry

Bakersfield, CA (March 10, 2025) – A 47-year-old man died after he was hit by a car on Edison Highway late Sunday night.

The California Highway Patrol said that on Sunday, March 9, at around 10:55 p.m., officers were called to Edison Highway at Mount Vernon Avenue for a report of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. CHP said a preliminary investigation found that a 46-year-old man was driving a 2004 Toyota Scion westbound on Edison Highway at Mount Vernon Avenue, in the number two lane.

The driver of the Toyota was unable to take evasive action and subsequently hit the pedestrian. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Authorities did not immediately name the person killed, pending confirmation of their identity and notification of their next of kin.

We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man's family members.

Pedestrian Accidents in California

California is among the states with the highest rates of pedestrian accidents. Urban centers like Los Angeles often experience an uptick in these incidents due to high traffic volume, dense populations, and distracted driving. Each year, thousands of pedestrians are injured, many of them suffering long-term or life-changing consequences.

Here are some common factors contributing to pedestrian crashes:

  • Distracted Driving: Cell phone use, eating, or other distractions can make drivers less aware of pedestrians, especially at intersections.
  • Unsafe Crossings: Pedestrians may be at greater risk when crossing streets without marked crosswalks or where visibility is poor.
  • Driver Impairment: Alcohol or drug use remains a leading cause of pedestrian-related crashes, impairing a driver’s ability to react in time.
  • Urban Areas: The dense nature of cities like Los Angeles, with multiple intersections and fast-moving traffic, adds to the challenges faced by pedestrians.
