Bakersfield, CA (September 18, 2025) – A 27-year-old woman from Covina tragically died early Wednesday morning after a collision involving a tractor on the southbound 5 Freeway in Bakersfield, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred around 3:10 a.m. near Valpredo Avenue. Investigators report that the woman was driving a 2023 Kia Sorrento when, for an unknown reason, she stopped in the No. 1 lane of the freeway.
At that moment, a 49-year-old man from Whitewater was driving a 2025 International tractor in the same southbound lanes. As the tractor approached the stopped Kia, the driver was unable to avoid the collision. The tractor struck the vehicle, and both vehicles came to rest in the dirt center divider.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The tractor driver was not injured in the crash.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the collision, but confirmed that alcohol and drugs were not contributing factors. Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.

Car accidents, especially those involving large commercial vehicles, are a significant concern in California. With the state’s extensive freeway system, collisions between cars and large trucks are all too common. Sadly, these accidents often lead to devastating consequences, particularly when the collision occurs at high speeds or when drivers are unable to react quickly enough.
The recent fatal crash on the southbound 5 Freeway highlights the dangers of stopped vehicles on fast-moving lanes. Stopping in the middle of a busy freeway is extremely dangerous, as it gives drivers behind little time to react. While the cause of this particular accident remains under investigation, stopping on a freeway lane, even for an emergency, can often lead to catastrophic consequences.
