Bakersfield, CA (August 16, 2025) – A tragic accident occurred on Thursday morning, August 14, when a 64-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle in northwest Bakersfield. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the crash at around 5:37 a.m. at the intersection of Olive Drive and Fruitvale Avenue.
According to CHP officers, a 57-year-old woman was driving a 2020 Chrysler 300 eastbound on Olive Drive at approximately 45 to 50 mph when the incident occurred. The traffic light for eastbound traffic was green at the time.
Meanwhile, a man on a bicycle attempted to cross Olive Drive in a southerly direction, traveling through both the westbound and eastbound lanes. For reasons still under investigation, the bicyclist reportedly entered directly into the path of the Chrysler.
The cyclist was struck by the vehicle and unfortunately died at the scene. The deceased was identified as Dennis Alan Scheideman, 64, of Bakersfield, by the Kern County Coroner’s Office.
The driver of the Chrysler stopped immediately, stayed at the scene, and cooperated with the investigation. CHP confirmed that alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash for the driver of the Chrysler.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Dennis Alan Scheideman during this difficult time. We wish them strength and peace.
Accidents between bicyclists and vehicles are often devastating, given the vulnerability of cyclists on busy roads. Even when all parties follow traffic rules, accidents can still happen in situations where the actions of one driver or pedestrian create a dangerous scenario.
For cyclists, it is critical to follow traffic signals, stay within designated bike lanes, and always remain visible to drivers, especially during early morning or late-night hours when visibility may be limited. Drivers, in turn, should exercise caution when approaching intersections, be aware of cyclists on the road, and avoid distractions that could delay their reaction times.
