Anaheim, CA (September 21, 2025) – On Saturday night, September 20, a fatal pedestrian accident was reported on the southbound lanes of the Orange (57) Freeway in Anaheim. The California Highway Patrol confirmed that the collision occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. near the Katella Avenue exit.
Emergency personnel were dispatched immediately following reports of the crash. A representative from the Orange County coroner’s office arrived at the scene at 11:01 p.m. to assist with the investigation and recovery process. The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver involved in the collision remained at the location and cooperated with authorities. No further details have been released regarding the identity of the pedestrian, and it is unclear at this time what circumstances led to the individual being on the freeway.
Southbound traffic on the 57 Freeway was significantly affected as officials worked to process the scene and conduct preliminary investigations. Motorists experienced delays in the area until the lanes were cleared. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the pedestrian during this difficult time.
Pedestrian collisions on freeways are particularly dangerous due to the speed and volume of traffic in these areas. Unlike typical roadway crossings, freeways are not designed for pedestrian travel, making accidents almost always severe or fatal when they occur. Locations near major exits, such as Katella Avenue on the 57 Freeway, present heightened risks when pedestrians are present in traffic lanes.
Accidents involving pedestrians on high-speed roadways often result in catastrophic injuries or fatalities. Victims have little to no protection from the force of an oncoming vehicle, and drivers typically have limited reaction time to avoid a collision. These incidents frequently lead to significant traffic disruptions as investigations are conducted and the roadway is cleared.
The causes of pedestrian freeway accidents vary and may include vehicle breakdowns, attempts to cross lanes on foot, or other emergencies. Investigators generally assess factors such as roadway conditions, lighting, vehicle speed, and driver actions when determining how a crash occurred.
Families who lose loved ones in pedestrian accidents face both emotional and financial challenges. In addition to funeral and burial costs, they may also endure the loss of income and companionship. California law allows surviving family members to pursue wrongful death claims when negligence or unlawful conduct contributes to a fatal accident. Compensation may include economic damages, such as lost wages and funeral expenses, as well as non-economic damages, including loss of support and guidance.
